A high-protein diet prevents weight regain after weight loss, as Europe has completed an investigation on nutrition.
This is one of the preliminary results of Project Diogenes (Diet, obesity and genes), conducted among families of 8 countries (Denmark, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Greece, Czech Republic, Germany and Spain), informed the Spanish University of Navarra , who participated in the study.
The research concludes that “increasing the intake of protein in the diet prevents weight regain after thinning, while the glycemic index of food related sugars does not play an important role.
For six months were followed to adult participants, who were required to lose at least 8 percent of their weight before the whole family were subjected to the intervention.
In total, 763 individuals lost weight half of 11.2 kilograms per person.
After this phase, 565 families (763 adults and 787 children) followed one of five diets were randomly assigned: four combined various proportions in the intake of protein and carbohydrates, and the fifth was based on the eating habits of the family, but with tips on healthy food.
Those who received a high protein diet did not regain the lost weight while others gained between 2 and 2.5 kilos after weight loss.
The final findings of the project will be known in May 2009, when presented at the European Congress on Obesity taking place in Amsterdam.
